It was not the best of times for Western Albemarle senior Tyler Stutzman in late November for the Foot Locker South in Charlotte, North Carolina. He had given his all in a quest to make it to the Foot Locker Nationals, but his body shut down on him. In top 10 position with less than 400 meters to go, a dehydrated and energy depleted Stutzman bonked and was unable to finish the race. Meanwhile, his teammate Kyle Satterwhite and familar rival Alex Ott went by him at that time to move onto the Foot Locker Finals in San Diego. It was not Stutzman's day, but this indoor season has proven to be very fruitful for him and he has rarely come up empty handed. Between punching his ticket to Millrose with an incredible negative split and 2:02 last half mile in a victory at the Montgomery Invitational mile earlier this month as well as most recently running the nation's fastest 3200 meter time at 9:05 in a great duel against Bobby Peavey at Virginia Tech, Stutzman has made up for that missed opportunity in November. His redemption from not making it to San Diego may come this weekend on the big stage in the high school mile at the Millrose Games, which will be televised to a national audience on ESPN. With one of the fastest mile times currently in the nation and fresh off his big PR 3200 performance at Tech, the senior from Crozet, VA has an excellent chance to make history in becoming only the third Millrose Games high school mile champion from Virginia. Kellam's Bobby Peavey (pictured right by John Herzog) will be one of three Virginians competing at the Millrose Games next weekend in New York City. He was estatic when learning of the news he had been selected albeit at a crazy late hour. "I had a feeling I might get invited after Montgomery, but it didn't hit me until my coach texted me at 3 AM that I was actually going to Milrose. It feels amazing." The senior Peavey earned his trip to New York based off two swift times posted this past month in the one mile race at the Montgomery Invitational and most recently in a 1600 meter race at the Eastern Challenge held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He certainly has asserted himself early on in the indoor season as shown with a US #1 9:08 3200 meter performance in the December at CNU. Read more...

Due to a decline by one of the nine original selections for the high school boys' mile at the Millrose Games, Thomas Edison senior and Foot Locker All-American Leoule Degfae will now be joining original selections and fellow Virginians Tyler Stutzman of Western Albemarle and Bobby Peavey of Kellam in the prestigous race. The state of Virginia will represent a third of the total field with the top three finishers from the Montgomery Invitational mile race two weeks ago. Stutzman won the race in Landover, Maryland to virtually cement his spot in the Millrose field in a US #4 time of 4:14.91, while Peavey and Degfae had to sweat out their selections as they had to wait to see how others on the East Coast ran on faster banked tracks up north.  Peavey followed up his runner-up finish to Stutzman by posting another swift time this past weekend in the 1600 meter run at the Eastern Challenge with a 4:14.84 win. Peavey and Degfae also have the nation's #1 and #2 fastest times for 3200 meters at 9:08 and 9:13 respectively this season. The mile at Montgomery was Stutzman's only race thus far this season compared to Peavey and Degfae who have already competed in several invitationals, but he will competing at Virginia Tech this weekend as he tunes up for the big race in the Big Apple. He'll be running the 3200 in Blacksburg to see if he can post similar season best times to Peavey and Degfae. The Millrose Games high school boys' mile race will be held Friday, January 30th on the 11 laps to a mile banked track at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Chantilly's Wes Sun has been vaulting at new heights this season with clearances of 14'6", 14'7", and personal best 14'8" at the FIT Invitational in late December to pose as potentially the #1 challenger to AAA state outdoor champion Allen Kelly of King's Fork. Sun will be vaulting this weekend at UNC. Photo by Ted Plunkett The scarcity of indoor meets in North Carolina and entry standards for the Eastern Challenge at UNC leads to a ridiculous amount of bogus and false seed times as shown by Landstown sprint star Marlena Wesh being seeded 15th in the 55 meter dash behind many inferior athletes as well as Nike Indoor All-American Curtis Campbell of Grassfield potentially not going to run in the fast section of the 500 meter dash because of false seeds ahead of him. But it should be all settled on meet day as both Wesh and Campbell should be some of the top performers from Virginia this weekend in Chapel Hill. Read more...

The 50th annual William & Mary Invitational will be contested this weekend at Eastern State Hospital. The longest running high school cross country invitational might not be as large and competitive in past years with meets such as Oatlands and Maymont growing to fields of 100 plus schools, but the meet still has a large gathering and will feature some of the state's better runners and teams including matchups of VA #1 Jamestown and VA #9 Western Branch as well as VA #4 Andrew Colley and VA #8 Bobby Peavey. The Newport News Invitational saw a very early season showdown of the two runners who likely will be battling for the Eastern Region title later this season in Kellam's Bobby Peavey and Western Branch's Blake Theroux. The only definite heading into the race would be that fast times would be posted in a duel between the two as the #10 ranked (Peavey) and #11 ranked (Theroux) in the state of Virginia would meet on one of the fastest 5K courses in the state found at Newport News Park. The senior Peavey defeated the junior Theroux in their first head-to-head race of the season with a state leading 5K time of 15:32 to break the old course record of the newer version of the Newport News Park course. Photo by Andy Paisley The Beach District boys' race should look something like this year. Not too different from last year with a  Kellam runner running way out in front then followed by a pack of Ocean Lakes harriers. Bobby Peavey of Kellam should easily defend his district title, while also looking ahead to bigger wins at the regional and state meet. He will be more interested at the district meet if his team can give the defending team champions from Ocean Lakes a scare. The Dolphins return a potent top three in Drew Paisley, Conor Doan, and Seth Cunningham, but also had four graduations from their 2007 top seven. Meanwhile, Kellam returns their entire top 6 from a district runner-up squad last year. The Ocean Lakes girls could possibly have a perfect score at the district meet with the top four returnees from last year's race including All-State cross country runner Stacey Nobles. Landstown's Stephanie Frenchik could stop those plans of a top 5 sweep though as she really improved during the track season with a 3200 best of 11:22 as well as running on the state champion 4x800 meter relay.

Photo by Ted Plunkett The goal of every runner who comes to the Group AAA state cross country meet is to make it on the awards podium. That means placing in the top 15 individually or top three as a team. Tallwood senior Octavia Rinehardt and Western Branch’s girls both achieved those goals, placing third on a cold Saturday morning at Great Meadow. Rinehardt ran a personal-best 18 minutes, 5.9 seconds, the fastest time ever posted by an Eastern Region girlsat the state meet. It’s also the sixth-fastest time overall at the state meet. Octavia Rinehardt was running so smooth and effortlessly Thursday afternoon that it looked like she was taking a stroll through the park. Rinehardt, a Tallwood senior, was running in Bells Mill Park, but she was far from strolling. No, she was dominating as she breezed around the course in a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 18.10 seconds to win her first Eastern Region cross country title. “I just wanted to run my race and go for a good time more than anything,” said Rinehardt, who won by 25 seconds. Photo by Andy Paisley Every runner at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex course knew that both of Ocean Lakes’ teams have been snakes in the Beach District grass all season. And at the Beach District cross country championship meet on Wednesday, they decided to strike. Ocean Lakes coach Mike Nestor’s strategy of saving his top runners’ energy by withholding them from regular district meets paid immediate dividends, as both the boys and girls notched dominant victories. The “I thought we were the fresher team today,” Nestor said. “We ran better as a group today. We packed it up real well and they looked good.”Read full story...

The Beach District Meet on Wednesday will have the Ocean Lakes boys and girls going for another sweep of the team titles, while the Eastern Region's top runners in Bobby Peavey of Kellam and Octavia Rinehardt (pictured right by John Herzog) of Tallwood are capable of putting up course record times at Sportsplex Park in Virginia Beach. There is a strong chance that three of the Beach District champions will be the Eastern Region champions next Thursday at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake with the Ocean Lakes boys, Peavey, and Rinehardt.
Interview · Oct 21, 2007
Kellam junior Bobby Peavey is rarely mentioned among the others in the great junior class of distance runners found in the state of Virginia. Maybe its because he is in the Eastern Region, which normally takes a backseat to other parts of the state in cross country. Maybe its because he has yet to pop that great state meet performance. Whatever the reason may be, Peavey is ready to start making a name for himself on the state level as he heads into championship season this fall. Peavey set a course record of 15:47 at Bells Mill Park at the Chesapeake Invite in late September and looks to be the favorite for the Eastern Region title. While Peavey will be looking to take care of business in his region, he is also looking to come through big at the state meet and shake past disappointments in state competition. MileStat.com's Brandon Miles was able to catch up with the Eastern Region's best distance runner in an interview.

More than 80 schools will be represented at Saturday's William & Mary Invitational as many outstanding cross country runners and teams from Virginia, Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina will be spread out among the three varsity race divisions. Leading the individuals will be newly minted stars with Foot Locker South rankings in Virginia private school runners Johns Ross (pictured above by Linda D'Amato) of The Potomac School and Barbara Strehler of Trinity. The Jamestown boys will be the overwhelming team favorites with none of their fellow NTN regionally ranked Virginia squads present to take on the NTN Southeast #3 ranked Eagles on their home course at Eastern State Hospital. Meanwhile, Eastern Region title contenders in the Western Branch and Ocean Lakes girls look to clash for the first time this season with several Northern Virginia teams looking to make things interesting.

4:21 is only good enough for 7th at Nike Spring Invite 1600 Mike Spooner of West Springfield and Chris Tyson of West Springfield worked out a pre-race plan to take the first 800 meters out together in 2:04 and then Tyson would push the third lap in hopes of both attaining personal best times and possibly a run at a sub 4:10. Neither was able to come close to breaking 4:10, but Spooner earned a PR in a 4:13.31 win and their bold racing strategy made the rest of the field come along for the ride with 7 runners at 4:21 or faster for one of the deepest races one will find in Virginia in the distance event.
