In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt

Hello everyone. It is officially post season and many of us are preparing to do our last three meets ever for our respective high schools. What an overwhelming thought that can be. I know it has finally kicked in now that these are my last meets for Maclay. As districts approaches I am really getting that bitter sweet feeling everyday at practice. But before I get into these upcoming meets and our last week at practice I would like to give a small shout out to Andres Arroyo. What a beast! As the whole country knows, he recently ran 1:47 at the Florida Relays, but what is even more impressive is that he came back two days later to run a 9:01 solo effort 3200m. It has been great getting to know this kid and I know he will have a bright future as a Gator. Congrats on all your accomplishments and I’ll be sure to see you at the next level Andres!

So, while everyone was chomping away at the UF meet and throwing down some killer races, we were on our newly refurbished track doing some intense 400m repeats.  It was actually pretty nice not having a meet last weekend. It was great to relax over the weekend and it allowed us to do a really hard work out Friday. Coach Droze does an amazing job preparing us for the championship season. After that workout, it looks like both the girls and boys team are in the best shape and are ready to do work! I know when I am going to have a really hard work out that will help us gage where we are at, I can sometimes get a little nervous beforehand. But sure enough during these 400’s my body overcame my mind. I came into it underestimating myself and my body was able to do more than I expected. It was a great feeling and it was also great to see the whole team beasting it out,

After an awesome workout that Saturday we had a girl’s team dinner. It’s always fun to get some bonding time in with everyone on the team and eat amazing food. That has to be the best part!.We go from talking and laughing with each other then when dinner is served, literally you can hear the clock ticking we are that quiet. Or shall I say our mouths are just full of food the whole time. We also played the game Minute To Win It, which was quite comical. All in all it was great weekend with the ladies.

This week we have districts on Friday and we are all ready to get to work and show everyone what we’ve got. Everything is a build up to state and I know as a team we have worked really hard and now it is time to put it all together. I will try not to get all sentimental right now because we still have three meets left, but I would definitely like to say what an honor it has been to compete for Maclay. It has been the best five years and I have been guided in the right direction with academics and athletics. For every senior out there, wear your school uniform with pride these last few meets. Show everyone that you are a proud member of your school and compete with heart and passion.Track and field is a team sport. Your individual events in the end come together to make up a total team score. So, go out there and give it your all. Good luck everyone at districts. God Speed.
