With just one returning state qualifier in the 5A Boys Pole Vault, there was a lot to be determined in this year's competition.

On top of the nerves associated with competing at the coveted UIL State Track and FIeld Meet, athletes had to overcome another obstacle with some rain coming in.

After an unsuccessful first attempt at 14 feet, New Caney Porter's Cantrelle Brooks cleared his next three vaults. The senior, despite entering with a regional height that wouldn't have projected him to finish in medal contention, delivered big with a final vault of 15'-6".

Ryder Harrison from Gregory-Portland won the tiebreaker for second place after success on his first attempt of 14'-6" and 15'. The Gregory Portland senior was the only underclassmen in the field.

Braylon Brown kept himself in contention for a medal after clearing his final attempt at 14-6'. The Aledo junior needed just one attempt at 15' and that was enough to give him the final podium spot with fewer misses than Georgetown's Daniel Mirzai.
