Worlds Report: Ohio's Emily Infeld Advances To 5000m Finals

Success continued for Ohio's own on Wednesday at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

In heat 1 of the 5000, Emily Infeld produced a season's best 15:00.98 mark for 6th place and inclusion in Saturday's final round. The top five finishers from Infeld's heat auto-qualified for the finals, which left Infeld waiting on the results from heat 2 to learn her fate.

Needing the 10th place finisher from the second race to run slower than her time, Infeld's advancement became clear once Germany's Alina Reh crossed the line in tenth position at 15:13.92.

Infeld, a 2008 Beaumont School grad and Georgetown University alum, will share the track with familiar company on Saturday evening, as American teammates Karissa Schweizer and Elise Cranny also navigated their way through the opening heats. Schweizer recorded a 14:53.69 mark for fifth in heat 1 and Cranny clocked 14:53.20 to place fifth in heat 2.

Watch Infeld's post-race interview above, where she debriefs on her performance and discusses the then on-going heat 2, which determines her finals status. Infeld also remarked about her unplanned ten day interruption of training following the USATF Outdoor Championships, as she recovered from a mild case of COVID-19.
