DCSAA Championships Meet Recap

PUSH! ARCHBISHOP CARROLL AND DUNBAR HIGH SCHOOL DUEL TO A DRAW FOR THE DCSAA TITLE

State championships are won in two ways; compete and score in almost every event or score big in the few events your in. The Archbishop Carroll Lady Lions and Dunbar Crimson Tide decided on a combination of both as they dueled their way to a 108 point draw for the DCSAA State Title.

Carroll and Dunbar dominated the podium over the two days of competition, with both teams scoring in 12 of the 17 events. The Lady Lions were led on the track and field by junior Nile Brown. She won the 100h in 15.14, the Long Jump with a leap of 18'-5.75", medaled in the 300h in 47.74 and contributed to the Carroll's record breaking 4x100 relay performance of 47.70. But Brown was not a one-man gang, points came from everywhere for the Lions. But it was their dominant sprint corps that stood out.

The Lady Lions scored a whopping 23 points in the 100m, with Freshman Victoria Perrow taking the event in a state record of 12.10 followed closely by fellow freshman Tiffani Pittman who took 2nd and junior Janoah Syers in 4th. The sprinting power also took 1st in the 4x100, 2nd in the 200m (Pittman) and 2nd in the 4x200.

"We weren't fully loaded out there, but we were well balanced and had strong performances in both the track and the field" stated Carroll Coach Rafiu Bakare. " When you have 10 of 12 girls score your going to contend for the title."

Dunbar's senior Thea Shaw paced the scoring for the Crimson Tide. Winning the High Jump in a state record of 5'-8", the 300m hurdles in a state record of 43.61, 2nd in the 100m hurdles and 6th in the 200m. Shaw's impressive stats were balanced by Dunbar's wide depth on the track and superlative field presence. With the exception of the discus, the Crimson Tide scored in double figures in every field event for a total of 48 points.

HOLMAN IS GOLDEN

Ziyah Holman of Georgetown Day took down her own meet record in the 400m running 54.40 and came back later to hold off Archbishop Carroll's freshman Tiffani Pittman with a meet record performance in the 200m of 24.51.

WILSON REPEATS AS BOYS CHAMPIONS

Woodrow Wilson Boys repeated as the DCSAA Team Champions with balance. Scoring in 12 of 17 events the Tigers defeated an equally adept Mckinley Tech. Wilson scored in all but 2 track events during the competition which helped them outpace their competitors in the end.

HAMMOCK AND OFOTAN WRITE THEIR NAMES IN THE RECORD BOOKS

The Field School's Justin Ofotan and Archbishop Carroll's Kendel Hammock were unmatched in their disciplines. The senior Ofotan ran away from all challengers in the 100m, setting the meet record in the prelims in 10.58 and then running away from the field in a relaxed 10.64 in the final. Ofotan repeated his record breaking ways in the 200m as he distanced himself from Theodore Roosevelt's Taahir Kelly for the win in 21.61.

Kendel Hammock was unphased by coming into the 110m hurdle finals as the 2nd seed. The junior out paced his competitors by nearly a second on his way to the gold medal and meet record of 14.77. He repeated his winning ways in the 300m hurdles, again showing his quality by distancing himself from the field by nearly a second in route to his 2nd record performance of 40.07.
