Ryan Oosting Makes Statement With Nation-Leading 2-Mile Ahead Of New Balance

Ryan Oosting made a giant statement this weekend.

The Arlington (MA) High junior became the first runner in the country this indoor season to break the elusive 9-minute barrier in the 2-mile, scoring a winning effort of 8:57.59 at the New England Indoor Championships. It marked an overall career best for Oosting and an 11 second indoor best.

In doing so, Oosting is positioned as one of the favorites in 2-mile at New Balance Nationals Indoor next week in New York. Only five boys broke that mark in 2017.

Oosting's previous best in the race came over the outdoor season, when he claimed a state title at the distance in 9:05.85. His race on Saturday marked the fifth time he's run the 2-mile this season alone, though it won't be the last.

Along with the DMR, where Oosting will likely anchor his Arlington squad in the 1600m, the junior will also compete in the 2-mile. It's a race that Brentwood (TN) High senior Brodey Hasty took in thrilling fashion a year ago in 8:45.16.

Fairfield Prep (CT) senior Drew Thompson was second in a US No. 2 mark of 9:07.59.
