Oscar Smith, Not Branch, Has The One-Two Punch To Win States

It was apparent outdoors that this year was going be strong for the Oscar Smith Tigers. Often overshadowed by other 757 teams these athletes have used that slight to their advantage in hopes of taking the state by storm this February.

These athletes have fought for many state titles and won quite a few. Many elite athletes have come out for the team every couple years to this Chesapeake school but this year they are all there at the right time. The two biggest of which are Kurt Powdar and Aaron Shirley

These two combined for a staggering 44 points (including the 4x400m relay) last outdoor season and enter the season stronger than ever. This was especially evident after their 7.36 and 7.33 season opening performances. Powdar's being just that more impressive considering he did go 7.36 in the GHS Invite prelims without blocks.

This tandem of athletes puts them as the early season favorites for the 6A State Team title. In our estimates, it will take roughly 50 points to win the ship. Doing some quick math that will mean they need to go 1-2 in the hurdles (18), win the high jump (28), score in the 4x200 (30), score in the shot put (36), win the 4x400 (46), and find at least another four points (50) to give themselves a solid shot at this title.

It goes without saying too that these guys have the speed to also pick up points in the dash or open 300, the question will be though do they save it for the 4x400 or try and seal the deal earlier. In 6A more so than any other classification the name of the game is depth or superstar talent. Pick one and put all your cards into it.

Until States though it is going to be fun watching these two superstars shine.
